Rationale:
This is to rename Scholastic Academy for Academic Excellence, Prekindergarten to Grade 8, and to dedicate it to honor the significant and far-reaching contributions of Ella Fitzgerald.

Resolution
WHEREAS a proposal has been communicated to the President and all of the Trustees of the Board of Education to rename and dedicate Scholastic Academy for Academic Excellence the Ella Fitzgerald Academy, and

WHEREAS the District celebrates and pays homage to lives and accomplishments of Yonkers residents past and present, and
WHEREAS Ella Fitzgerald lived and went to School 18 currently known as Scholastic Academy for Academic Excellence, and

WHEREAS Ella Fitzgerald’s passion for music and determination to succeed through a challenging childhood and the Great Depression serves as an inspiration to all students, and

WHEREAS outside of the Arts, Ella Fitzgerald had a deep concern for child welfare and generously supported organizations for disadvantaged youths, and

WHEREAS the tenets of Ella Fitzgerald Academy will build on Dr. Howard Gardner’s theory of Multiple Intelligences: Linguistic, Logical/Mathematical, Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Musical, Interpersonal, Intrapersonal, and Naturalist, to maximize the potential of every student who enters the school, and

WHEREAS students for generations to come will celebrate the life of Ella Fitzgerald whose legacy will remain as an amazing role model inspiring a love for the Arts, learning and courage, and

WHEREAS the Trustees have reviewed and affirm that the request meets the criteria set forth in Policy 7500 – Naming and Dedicating School District Property.

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: that we, the Members of the Board of Education, do hereby affirm the renaming and dedication of the Ella Fitzgerald Academy.
