Resolution: WHEREAS a proposal has been communicated to the President and all of the Trustees of the Board of Education to rename and dedicate the future Community School #35 the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School, and WHEREAS United States Supreme Court Associate Justice Sonia Sotomayor is recognized for her contributions to steadfastly uphold the laws of the United States to ensure equity, access and equal representation for all, and WHEREAS Justice Sotomayor is the first Hispanic and the third woman to serve on the High Court, and WHEREAS Justice Sotomayor is dedicated to the judicial process and is an inspiration, especially for Americans who feel marginalized or underrepresented, and WHEREAS Justice Sotomayor has a reputation for her attention to detail, straightforwardness, and a fighting spirit. Justice Sotomayor’s extensive history advocating for underserved communities resulted in a more diverse staff at her alma maters Princeton University and Yale Law School. During her tenure as a professor at New York University and Columbia Law School, Justice Sotomayor promoted more diverse representation in the judicial system by encouraging the next generation of law students to be more ethnic and racially inclusive, and WHEREAS the Trustees have reviewed and affirm that the request meets the criteria set forth in Policy 7500 – Naming and Dedicating School District Property. NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: that we, the Members of the Board of Education, do hereby affirm the renaming and dedication of the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School.
