Scope: The purpose of the Student Assistance Services program is to prevent and reduce substance use and abuse by providing the following activities: identification and assessment of high-risk students; on-site counseling; parent education; referral to community agencies and case management; small group activities that focus on developing and improving social competency skills and the promotion of positive healthy alternatives; participation in child study team meetings; coordination of special events related to alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention; participation in community and school task forces and coordination of in-service training on alcohol and drug issues for school staff.

Student Assistance Services will provide services to Yonkers students in grades 6 through 8 (middle school) focusing on increasing awareness of the dangers of using substances, especially those containing Fentanyl, other opioids, and or other adulterants and contaminants, through a combination of information sharing, knowledge building, skill development, and norms clarification.

This contract will be funded through the Opioid Settlement, and ESSER II funds.
FOCUS POPULATION: At-Risk adolescents and young adults

ASSESSMENT PROCESS:
The results will be measured by using questionnaires to document changes in students’ attitudes and behaviors. The questionnaires will be completed by the Student Assistance Services Counselors upon first meeting the student, and at the end of the school year.

Resolution: Ladies and Gentlemen:

WHEREAS the Yonkers Public Schools wishes to fulfill its obligations to provide a comprehensive drug prevention intervention and education program to its high school students in order to maintain a safe school environment, and

WHEREAS the Student Assistance Services Program increases the perception of risk of harm of drug use, decreases students’ association with peers involved in delinquent behavior, increases student bonding to school, and prevents and reduces student’s substance use, and

WHEREAS the Student Assistance Services helps students with chemically dependent parents become educated about their parents’ addiction and improve school performance, interactions with others, and increase participation in healthy activities, and

WHEREAS the Student Assistance Services is a science-based national model prevention program as determined by the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, the Department of Justice, and the Department of Education, and

WHEREAS the Student Assistance Services will provide part-time Student Assistance Counselors in the high schools,

NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: That the Superintendent of Schools is hereby authorized to enter into a contract with Student Assistance Services to provide these services at a total cost not to exceed $ 484,396.00.
